NZ Part 2 - The Two Towers

Maybe I was a little too quick to judge Auckland. The city looked much more welcoming in the daylight. We walked around and explored with no real plan and eventually ended up at Sky Tower. As the tallest structure in the city, and apparently in the entire southern hemisphere, it's hard to miss. When we got up close the other thing that was hard to miss was the bungee jumping platform. We hoped to see it in use but unfortunately no one was feeling that adventurous.

Weta Workshop is the design and special effects studio that worked on all the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies and they have an interactive tour in Auckland. It's not an actual studio but kind of like Disney world for anyone interested in movies. You get to see how they take concepts and ideas and turn them into reality with makeup, costume, miniatures, forced perspective, and other tricks. We're all ready to make a movie now.

After that we went in search of food and got our first fish and chips! First of many I assume. And found a park by the waterfront. We were really starting to like the city. And then we didn't. Katie tripped on a path that was paved with sharp stones and sliced her hand right open. Then Mandy and Katie spent most of the afternoon at urgent care. Not really what we had planned for the day but Katie was a good sport and proud of her brace.

The rest of us ended up at a park nearby that had a farm inside of it. You could get right in with the animals and Frankie loved it. He decided he was ready to leave his suburban life behind and become a farmer. He was more than a little upset when I didn't let him stay.

When we were all back together eventually we climbed One Tree Hill. Not to be confused with the teen drama from the 2000s. It's a volcanic peak and is currently treeless. The namesake tree died years ago but instead there's a large obelisk. And who doesn't love a good obelisk. From the top you can see the Auckland skyline and the harbor. This is how I like my cities, from a distance with no parking required.
